Although the church is not large and the area has become run down, we do enjoy a great spirit of unity in Christ. This is evident, despite our wonderful cultural, racial, social, and economic diversity. We truly are a church that is modeled after the Antioch prototype. By God’s grace, we have survived the many changes that have occurred in the city and context into which we minister : from a small mining village in the midst of a civil war to an industrial town and from a bustling city to an area facing urban decay. GBC has survived two world wars, a severe Flu epidemic, the Rand Revolt, the Great Depression, and Apartheid. In all of these situations, God’s hand of preservation has been upon the church and He has used it as an effective witness and means of His grace in the East Rand. As we travel through modern-day Germiston to get to the church, we cannot help but notice the urban decay, the signs of poverty, and a society losing self-respect. However, this only gives us an increased appreciation for the precious gift of a loving, caring, united and happy local church that the Lord has given to us. It is a blessing to have a church comprising a rich diversity of races, cultures, economic classes, ages, and so on. We are asked, from time to time, whether we have ever considered relocating to ‘better’ surroundings. The answer is that it would be impossible for us to do so, humanly speaking. Our current property is virtually unmarketable. So if the Lord wanted us to move, He would show us by making the impossible possible. However, as one member observed, we are like an oasis in a bleak landscape; who then would minister into this very needy area in which the Lord, by His providence, has placed us? Praise be to God for His unfailing love and faithfulness to us over the past 110 years. Soli Deo Gloria! WELL, THE ABOVE WAS WRITTEN IN JANUARY 2015 …..
The Church in 2018
We knew that our location and premises were a hinderance to church growth. Some even said that unless we moved, we would either close or become an inner-city mission campus of another church. The building – which has Heritage status (and therefore may not be altered), was becoming very expensive to maintain and if we did sell, we could never realistically get a price that would enable us to purchase or build anything in a better location. Our response, as above was that for us to move was a God sized task, only He could do it. So, for years the building has “technically” on the market, but not “realistically”. Over the years various churches looked at it, but either did not have the money, or the price was too high, or they weren’t interested – for the same reasons we were wanting to sell. Confirmation of the unsalability. Despite this, we as a church have continued, by God’s grace to grow. Our services are fuller now than they have ever been, the average age of our congregation is now younger than it has ever been due to an influx of young adults. Our Sunday school and youth ministry have grown, and the Lord has really been good. In May 2018, we sold the building to a firm of undertakers for more than we could ever have expected. God sized task, phase one accomplished! All praise and glory to His name. Of course, that presented us with phase two of the “impossible” task, that of finding a replacement. Like Abraham, we decided to take step one without knowing where or what step two would be. We identified an ideal area close enough to our existing building to prevent loss of any of our existing congregation while at the same time being very visible, attractive, accessible, and where development is happening. Although close to our existing building, the area is prime real estate by virtue of being, literally “the other side of the tracks”. Unfortunately, the limited vacant properties all well above what we are getting for our building, and building costs are prohibitive. So, we started looking at houses that could be repurposed. But again, most the houses in that area are way beyond what we were getting for our building. Nevertheless, we sought, and we found. We have purchased a perfectly situated property in the desired area, on a main route, (the same road as MacDonald’s, KFC, Burger King, Nando’s, Pick n Pay, Woolworths, Clicks, Builder’s Express etc.) highly visible and easily accessible, for less than what we sold our old building. Just 2km from our present site, the property is three and a half times bigger than our existing property and although run down and in need of some extensive alterations and renovations, can be repurposed. The vacant property next door is on the market for three times what we are paying! God sized task, phase two accomplished! How awesome is the God we serve? Of course, there is still a lot of ground to cover. Although zoned for residential and public worship, we do need to get special consent from the municipality and neighbours. – that will be God sized task phase three. Then there is the disruption of moving from a building that we have been in for the past 72 years! Into a building that needs much by way of alterations. We have an architect working on the plans for us, but at this stage we don’t have any estimates on costs and what we will be able to afford. That will be God sized task phase four. Please pray for us in terms of the disruption of the move, the issue of “Special Consent of use” and the financial implications involved with the renovations and alterations.
